We’ll clear a path…
We clear a path for your fantastic past-fifty future!
Hey, Fellow Traveler, Life’s journey sure can be delightful and fulfilling—but also mighty frustrating!
Want a fantastic past-fifty future?
Along the way, you feel that good things are surely just ahead. So you keep on trudging–hoping, longing. Then, as you near age fifty, our youth-obsessed culture attacks your hopes and dreams! You hear its voice: “Fifty? You’re past your prime!” “You’ve had your day and you’ve had your say!” “Step aside, old-timer!” “Ease back,…or park and watch from the side of the road!” WHAT? Ease back? Park? Watch? Old-timer?– At 50? Do you buy any of that hogwash? I don’t! Not for a minute!
Instead, from fifty forward, “the best is yet to be!” Your past has set the stage! You’re ready! Up to this point your journey has had highs and lows, pluses and minuses, victories and defeats, sunshine and shadows. You’ve lived! That has equipped you to move forward, minimize mistakes, enjoy the trip, exult in its vistas, achieve your unfulfilled dreams and leave a marvelous legacy. Don’t let anyone or anything tell you otherwise! You can be a hero to those who journey with you—especially your children, grandchildren, and others of younger generations! And to yourself! Imagine it! Right now, though, the path ahead may seem uncertain, risky and perhaps scary. Sure would be nice to have a trail map and a guide, wouldn’t it? And to have some awesome traveling companions to share the journey with you. You can!
But our culture’s doom and doubt takes its toll. Less competent younger people may slip past you for promotions. Doors close. Doubts multiply. Dreams fade. On the family front, children and grandchildren may seem too busy and distracted to have time for you. At the personal level, your failures, self doubts and the stories you tell yourself—compounded, possibly, by health issues—may lead you to the delusion that your destiny is simply to drag forward—or stagger to the side, a discouraged and weary observer. Don’t let this happen to you! You deserve more than that!
Join us on the “YETNESS JOURNEY”, where we believe that life past fifty should be prime time! And we do what we can to make sure it is! I’ve traveled this road. I know its delights. I know its dangers. I’ve discovered delightful scenes you must not miss and distractions to avoid. I even know where there is shelter for times of storm. That gives security as we explore the path together. And I know that greatest pleasure comes when we have with us like-minded people whose company we enjoy. We all need encouragement along the way. It’s not easy to persistently pursue your worthy destination: To become the version of yourself you long to be. And to be a hero to your fellow travelers, to those who will follow you, and even to yourself.
Not easy, but so worth it!
Now for a secret: I long for you to be a winner! Not just the winner you are or have been, but the winner you wish to be and yet can be! Let me slip in and travel alongside you on the journey to offer companionship, insights, inspiration, and tools for the trip. I’ll introduce you to some fantastic fellow travelers who have rich experiences to share with us. But you may wonder, “Who are you and why are you qualified as a guide?”
I’m Philip Dale Smith, mostly known as just “Dale” but sometimes, GrandpaDale. I’m founder of “The Yetness™ Journey”. I’m an old timer who, in my fifties, stalled in my tracks. I had to take a hard look at what I was doing and where I was going. I had to reboot or I was going to fade out. Or fizzle out. My first thirty-plus years of adulthood were an absolute checkerboard of astonishing successes and heart-wrenching failures. That combination gave me a deep reservoir of experience, knowledge and spot-on insights to share with fellow travelers. I delight in doing just that!
From childhood I’ve enjoyed being a helper. I always loved children and treasured family, so I worked extensively in church, school, and community programs, especially projects to strengthen families and enrich the lives of children. I became a founder of youth camps in three states and Canada. Side trips along the way led me to be a marketing, management, and communication consultant and trainer.
I won the “World Championship of Public Speaking” in Toronto, Canada (Sponsored by Toastmasters International), have given speeches in forty-five states and on three continents, have worked in radio and television and been a guest (or host) on hundreds of radio and TV shows—many about children, family, and abundant living. I’ve even been a bit venturesome, making trips to danger spots in the Middle East and multiple books reference my exploits as a cave explorer, including Exploring American Caves, Caves of Tennessee, and Atlas of the Great Caves of the World. In one cave adventure I squeezed, lying on my side, into a narrow vertical crevice that became known in cave lore as “The Meatgrinder”. What I discovered led to the opening to the public one of the nation’s most beautiful show caves—seen by millions on PBS specials.
A LITTLE SECRET…
Am I bragging? Probably sounds like it! But I mention the things above, not to boast, but to underscore that while life has been and is exciting, I’m convinced that even more exciting is what’s ahead–our “Yetness Journey”! I intentionally said “our” because I’d surely like to see it enrich your life and your heritage. I’m personally determined to leave a legacy of much more than money. How? Largely by helping you and others do the same—as your make the most of your past-fifty years—your Yetness Journey!
I’m awed by the power of family—both actual and virtual! I’m astonished by how “big people” can touch “little people.” One reason for my awe is that I’m the product of an “it-will-never-work” marriage! My mother-to-be was a gentle little widow. My dad-to-be was a “bad-news bachelor with a short fuse and fast fists who ‘wasn’t worth his salt.’” But he met that little widow, and, to the astonishment of all who knew them, and to the dismay of some, he wooed and wed her. The rest, if not quite “history” is legendary, at least to family and in their community. Because…
Amazingly, their marriage did work! I was born three years after they married and got to see bit of Dad’s transformation and how and why they so marvelously made it succeed. And I saw how it generated a gentle, sweeping tidal wave of influence for good, especially for children and families. I was a primary beneficiary, and yet…that’s not the whole story. What I’ve said has given glimpses of the sunny side of my life. There is a dark side.
Have you noticed hints of shadows as I’ve outlined my journey? There are some. Perhaps because of a touch of ADD, I didn’t stay focused. I jumped from one path to another. I let myself be distracted by “bright-shiny-objects” scattered along the way. I listened to wrong advisors, made bad business decisions, and trusted wrong associates. Bankruptcy wiped out my business and we lost our home. I became distraught and depressed.
But I kept a smile on my face as I tried to maintain fully-functioning faith and to keep on trudging. As I did, I learned that no matter how fancy and shiny the boots are that you wear on your journey, even one or two gravel in them can create excruciating pain! So I finally stopped hobbling along, paused, took several deep breaths, and re-booted! The result: In the process I uncovered a world of put-to-work insights, tools, and techniques to share with you—including the “Yetness™” concept. (Just wait till you hear the story behind that!) “Yetness” worked, and still works wonders for me and others and it will for you. For example: At age sixty, I would have told you, “I’m not a writer. I’m a speaker, but I never, ever, write out my speeches or much of anything else. I simply am not a writer.”
I should have tacked on one of the most important three-letter words in the English language. Do you know what it is? I should have said, “I simply am not a writer—YET!” At fifty-nine, my journey to authorship began. I met a guide. She nudged me onto my “Yetness” path as a writer and walked with me. Sometimes beside me, sometimes in front, and sometimes behind me. Eventually I soloed. But the guide was nearby. I was now moving along a path to create a worthwhile legacy and to have fun beyond imagining while doing so. In the next ten years, from age sixty to seventy, I wrote or coauthored six children’s picture books and three novels. Three became successful book-club offerings. One became an Amazon Kindle #1 best selling novel and quickly garnered more than 40,000 downloads and scads of five-star reviews.
Three received national awards, one of which was the Benjamin Franklin Award for Fiction. I captured my writing “yetness” –including getting to coauthor with my amazing daughter, Lisa Kay Hauser! I’ve gotten to work with thousands of school children and have conducted my family-enrichment series on how to make “Every Kid a Winner™,” from Alaska to Texas and from Honolulu, Hawaii to the Hamptons on Long Island, NY. Amazing doors opened. But then, the unexpected happened.
Life dipped into a dark valley, slowed, and veered onto a life-altering detour that I’ll travel the rest of my journey. Dementia hit my Mary Jo. When it happened, she had already been my wife for more than half a century. Now our journey careened off planned paths onto challenging new ones. It is a rough ride at times, as detours tend to be, but I’m seeing absolutely breath-taking vistas that I would otherwise have totally missed. For eight amazing years I’ve had the honor of being my Mary’s full-time caregiver. Sometimes it’s delightful. Sometimes it’s heart-rending.
But it’s teaching me a lot that can help us all live more fully now, hang in there when we or a loved one faces serious challenges, and to do more than cope—to capture the abundant “yetness” life still has for us. What it comes down to is this: I’ve garnered insights that I can’t wait to share with you. They’ll make a difference! They already have for many. I’m here to enrich your journey and help you enjoy creating a magnificent legacy. You can be a hero to those who make the trip with you and those who come after you—as my great-great grandfather, Abraham Monteque Shelton, born in 1800, is to me.
